Do you know what Teru Teru Bozu is? It’s a Japanese doll made with a piece of cloth which reminds a small cute ghost. As tradition requires, when it’s raining, people hangs it on their windows, while singing a little song, to make sure that the next morning will shines.
Given our actual crappy weather, today was the perfect day to craft this little ghost… you never know
I’ve made my Teru Teru using some felt fabric, and added a mini cloud mobile to it. Of course, having the song turning all around in my head during all this time.
This DIY is very simple, so, no big explanations here :)
On a small piece of felt (around an EU A4 format or letter format for the US), with a pencil, start by marking a first dot in the middle, then after adding some fiber padding, mark two more dots to visualize the eyes.
Using your needle, slip the central dot to drag the ribbon, which will be used to hang the doll. Make a loop of approximately 10cm, then slip again the needle and tie the ribbon.
To create the head, place a handful of fiber padding in the center of the felt piece, and close the rest with a ribbon, making a nice bow.
Put some glue on the eyes, and using the needle, drill gently the 2 dots you have market before and split the eyes in.
In the felt color of your choice, cut the desired shape for the cheeks and mouth, and stick them on the Teru’s head.
Obviously, if you’re a sewing queen (or king), you can stitch the eyes!
For the mobile, deep etch the desired shape twice, and cut it. Then add some fiber padding (not too much) and sew the edges.
We are almost done! Thread the small balls on some string, then sew the first part, just below the head, and the other part to the cloud. Repeat the operation on the cloud as many as you want!
And voilà! Your Teru Teru Bozu is ready to help you erase the rain!
By the way, I’ve made the doll on a rainy Saturday (October 6th). I’ve hung it at my window around 6.00 PM. When I opened my eyes on Sunday the next morning, the sun was happily filtering through the curtains… I let you imagine my surprise… as the weather was really terrible during all week.
So, I don’t know if the sun was planned to shine (I’m never watching the weather forecast), but as I’m a superstitious person (and as I like to believe in small miracles), I’ve started to really consider this small lovely doll differently! Thank you little Teru!
Have fun, and do not forget to sing the little Teru Teru bozu song!
